Riders of the Philadelphia Centurions Motorcycle Club celebrate Christmas for children at Shriners Children's Hospital in July

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Despite the warm weather, Sunday felt like Christmas at Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

Everyone smiled as the children opened their presents.

“This is our favorite day of the year. It keeps us awake until the actual giving season,” says Stephanie Byrwa, marketing and communications director for Shriners.

“Christmas in July is always a joyful occasion for the children,” said Gregory Pierce of Jenkintown.

Members of the Philadelphia Centurions Motorcycle Club presented gifts to the children.

Participants came for their 28th annual Christmas in July Toy Run. All money and toys will benefit the Shriners.

“When you drive by, you always see a smile on the kids' faces. They love the bikes. When you arrive, we always see them smiling,” Pierce said.

Parents say they really appreciate this event, as the days in the hospital can seem very long.

“When we came here he couldn't walk, he couldn't do anything, but now he can walk. He uses crutches, sometimes none at all, and he has tried to walk without any aids,” said Sura Alfallooji of Camden.

The riders say they look forward to the event every year.

“This is a matter close to our hearts and we want to continue to help offset the costs for these children as much as possible,” said Brian Cain, vice president of the Philadelphia Centurians.

In total, the group raised about $75,000, in addition to the brand new gifts they brought to the children.
