Haverty's Newgate Christmas bag contains the name “Angel Tree”

LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) – Over 30 years ago, Jerry Gardener wanted to help children have the best Christmas possible, so he started the Haverty's/Newgate Christmas Angel Tree.

“It's been wonderful to see all the families come in. They are always so grateful for everything that complete strangers do for them,” said Romnie Scott, Havertys/Newgate Christmas Bag volunteer.

Over the years, their name has become confused with other organizations' Christmas charities. Jerry's wife, Nan, said a plan has been hatched to change that.

“We are changing the name so there is no confusion with Haverty's/Newgate Christmas Bag,” said Nan Gardener, co-founder of Haverty's/Newgate Christmas Bag.

“It doesn't change how we work or who we serve, that's all the same. It just provides a little clarity between us and other organizations within the Elf Coalition,” Scott said.

To celebrate the new name and ring in the start of the holiday season, they hosted a Christmas in July party on Saturday.

“Everyone celebrates Christmas in July. It's just a prelude so you don't forget what's going to happen in a few months,” Gardener said.

Haverty's/Newgate Christmas Bag is delighted to be serving over 400 children this year. Preparations for the Christmas season have already begun and Gardener says they need lots of volunteers.
