Heritage Days 2024 at the Maison du Fontainier: Immerse yourself in the history of water in Paris

Are you ready to immerse yourself in the history of Paris during Heritage Days 2024? Then a visit to the Maison du Fontainier, an important place in the history of water in the capital, is just the thing.

What if we stayed underground after the Catacombs or the Carrière des Capucins and House of Fontaine? It is an ideal opportunity to delve into the bowels of Paris, through theHistory of waterBuilt between 1619 and 1623 in the Faubourg Saint-Jacques, the ashlar house is striking in its relationship to the 13 km longMédicis Aqueductof which it is 27th and final shaft (a masonry tool for inspecting underground pipes).

The king's well builder, Thomas Francine, lived here to Monitoring water distribution in the capital. The liquid circulating in the aqueduct reached the cellars of this house, which were divided into three basins: the Carmelite Basin, intended for the clergy; the Royal Basin, which supplied the Luxembourg Palace and its fountains; and the City Basin, intended for public fountains. The latter, however, had the least water!

Also known as“Greetings of the Lantern“, this house with its beautiful stone dormer windows lost its function in 1870 and was only declared a Monument Historique in 1994.
