Release date for Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet has been set

“A Complete Unknown,” the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as the famous musician, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day and on the big screen on December 25.

As of the current release date, “A Compete Unknown” will premiere on the same day as Robert Eggers’ remake of “Nosferatu” and one week after Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King.”

“Walk the Line” director James Mangold directed “A Complete Unknown,” a film that chronicles Dylan's early life and times. Set in early 1960s New York, the film begins when the enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in Greenwich Village and, when he straps on an electric guitar in 1965, “sparks an uproar in the folk community.” The first trailer, which premiered in July, shows Chalamet (who sings himself) performing a rousing rendition of “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall” and stopping by Dylan's favorite haunts like Cafe Wha? and the Hotel Chelsea.

Mangold and Jay Cocks adapted the screenplay from Elijah Wald's 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric,” while the title borrows a phrase from Dylan's folk-rock anthem “Like a Rolling Stone.” Although the real Dylan, now 83, is not involved in the film, he provided notes on the script and met with Mangold on several occasions.

“I spent several wonderfully charming days with him, personally, and talked to him,” Mangold said earlier this summer. “I have a script that he personally commented on and that I value very highly.”

“A Complete Unknown” features an extensive cast including Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.

The film is backed by Searchlight Pictures. Chalamet and Mangold serve as producers along with Fred Berger, Alex Heineman, Peter Jaysen, Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer and Jeff Rosen.
