Canada approves third open pit mine at Valentine gold mine

Calibre Mining has received federal environmental impact assessment approval to expand its Valentine gold mine in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, to include a third open pit called the Berry Pit.

This development follows a comprehensive review process by the IAAC.

The announcement was made by Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault.

In August last year, Calibre Mining filed an updated Environmental Impact Assessment with the IAAC. The update outlined proposed changes to the Valentine Gold Mine to include Berry Pit and modify associated infrastructure.

The IAAC conducted a detailed analysis of the updated environmental impact assessment, incorporating the results of consultations with indigenous groups, local communities and interest groups.

In addition, the IAAC reviewed feedback from its public comment process before making its decision.

After reviewing the information collected during the review process, Minister Guilbeault signed an amended decision statement.

This statement officially approves the expansion of the Valentine Gold Mine to include Berry Pit, allowing Calibre Mining to proceed with its expansion plans.

Darren Hall, President and CEO of Calibre, said, “I am pleased to announce that we have received federal environmental approval for the development of the Berry Pit in Valentine.

“With this approval and the recent award of mining and surface leases with the Province for Berry and associated infrastructure, we now have the key approvals required for the three pit mine plan contained in the 2022 Feasibility Study.

“Since acquiring Valentine in January, we have advanced development to 98%, construction from 50% to 77%, and hired an experienced operations team, positioning us to deliver first gold in the second quarter of 2025.”

In January of this year, Calibre purchased all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Marathon Gold.

This move gave Calibre a 100% interest in the Valentine Gold Project.
