'An idiot with kids' and a compulsive cheater: Why Liam Gallagher is the world's worst husband, according to his ex-wives | People

“Not being loved and not being able to love.” This is Liam Gallagher's greatest fear, as the former frontman of Oasis himself said in an interview in 2020. A confession whose vulnerability clashes with the Manchester-born singer's outrageous and cheeky public persona and, above all, with a romantic career marked by infidelity, absences and unhappy marriages. At 51, Gallagher seems ready to make amends for the sins of his long youth, both in health terms – he suffers from arthritis, psoriasis and an autoimmune disease that have led him to limit the consumption of certain substances – and emotionally, by restoring or forging paternal bonds with his various offspring for the first time. On the fraternal side, there is no news of his reconciliation with his brother Noel and the return of Oasis to the stage 15 years after their dissolution.

“I was a pretty bad husband and that affected my children, and I regret that,” he confessed in the documentary Liam Gallagher: How it was (2019). Gallagher has four children from four different relationships. He has never met the youngest in person. 11-year-old Gemma is the result of his affair with American journalist Liza Ghorbani. “I wish them all the best. If they ever need anything, call us,” he said of the little girl. The news of Ghorbani's pregnancy was the catalyst for the breakdown of his marriage to Nicole Appleton, a member of the pop group All Saints. According to the court proceedings formalizing their divorce, Gallagher told her about the adultery just hours before the news came to light in the press. He told her over the phone while Appleton was on vacation in July 2013. He has confessed that his biggest regret in life is “destroying marriages and acting like a damn idiot with children.”

It was far from the first affair for the rock star. A few months after his wedding to Appleton on Valentine's Day 2008, Gallagher had another extramarital affair. This time it was with singer Lily Allen, mid-flight while the two were en route to the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. Gallagher asked Allen not to say anything about their encounter as he was married, but the rumors gained so much momentum that he eventually called the singer to beg her to speak to his wife and deny everything. “When he told me of her existence, I was horrified, even though I wasn't the one who was married or unfaithful,” Allen revealed in her memoir Exactly my thoughtsAppleton and Gallagher have a son together, 23-year-old Gene, who is currently on his first UK tour with his band Villanelle after opening for his father's last tour.

Gallagher has two other children, also from extramarital relationships. The eldest is Molly Moorish, 26, who studied sociology and politics and is an ambassador for Centrepoint, a charity for the homeless. The singer first met her in 2018. They met in a pub, got drunk and, according to the ancestor, “there were tears and stuff.” They then accompanied Gallagher's two other sons to a Rolling Stones concert and a few days later on a trip to Ibiza in a private jet. Gallagher even dedicated a song to her, Now that I have found youto her. Molly assured The times that she bears no resentment towards her absent father: “Everything happened as it was supposed to happen. We just got along well and I'm glad to have him now.”

Molly's birth in the spring of 1998 kept the tabloid press busy for weeks. “The week after he married me, he went to Los Angeles and slept with this girl, Lisa Moorish, and got her pregnant. What a bastard,” Patsy Kensit, Gallagher's first wife, told the press. Deadly Weapon 2 Actress, model and singer of the group Eighth Wonder was one of the most famous women in the United Kingdom at the time, a sex symbol whose posters adorned the walls of many young people. Together, the couple became the face of the revival of Cool Britannia, a time of hope in which London was once again the capital of the cultural world after years of obscurantism under Thatcher. From Princess Diana to the Beckhams, Alexander McQueen, Damon Albarn, Tony Blair, Jarvis Cocker, the films of Hugh Grant and the works of Damien Hirst. But it was Liam and Patsy, Patsy and Liam, who were captured by the American edition of Vanity Fair Magazine to depict the phenomenon that would dominate the world in the 1990s: lying in bed under sheets printed with the Union Jack.

It was Kensit's own close friend – Moorish – who introduced the two. Fleeing the harassment of the press and after a few failed attempts, they married in privacy, alone, at 8.30am in Westminster Register Office. The relationship was plagued by scandal beyond the birth of Molly. “I cried every day of my marriage,” admitted Kensit, who daily witnessed the volatile character and tantrums of an addiction-drenched Gallagher. The Oasis singer was regularly unfaithful, but Kensit admitted she regretted ending their relationship for that reason: “I had heard all the rumours about his womanising and knew exactly what was going on behind my back,” she said. “Liam was very young and I could also see the temptations around him. I wasn't naive about how exhilarating it could be – and for Liam, it was all new.” Their years-long romance produced Lennon, who, at 23, used his famous surname and striking physical resemblance to his father to carve out a niche as a model on the international catwalk, working for brands such as Saint Laurent and Lanvin. He is also the face of Barbour.

With the exception of Gemma, the relationship between the other siblings seems surprisingly harmonious and close given their father's background. They enjoy holidays together and even posed with Liam for a feature film for The times for Father's Day 2019. Gallagher had no qualms about confirming he accepted the proposal because he “could use a bit of good press.” The proposal came from his current partner, who he describes as a “savior.” Debbie Gwyther, the artist's producer and manager, has shared her life with the singer since 2013, when cameras caught them kissing in Ibiza. Six years later, they got engaged on a trip to the Amalfi Coast, but Gallagher's third wedding has been postponed until 2023 due to his hip problems.

Despite the couple's stability, they appeared in the newspapers some time ago when Gallagher was accused of grabbing Gwyther by the throat in a London nightclub, an aggression that the artist denied on his social networks and that did not go beyond the scope of media gossip. Although the tabloids call their relationship “toxic”, Gwyther has always been a staunch defender of her fiancé's good heart. In the 2019 documentary about Gallagher, she explained: “The Liam I know and the Liam who is in the public eye are completely different. He sometimes drinks too much, he is impulsive and vulgar, but that does not mean that he cannot be tender at the same time. He is very responsible with the family. The way he behaves towards me, my family members, his children and his mother is the reason why I love him.”
