In Portland, the number of serious crimes is declining

PORTLAND, Oregon (KPTV) – Portland's violent crime rate declined in the first half of 2024, in line with declining rates nationwide.

The figures were released by the Major City Chiefs Association, which represents the police chiefs of the largest cities in the United States and Canada.

Nearly 10,000 cyclists cycled through Portland and across its famous bridges on Sunday as part of one of the largest community bike rides in the world.

In the first six months of 2024, Portland saw a 17% decrease in the murder rate compared to the first six months of 2023.

In terms of robberies, Portland has seen a 23% drop in robberies, below the national average of 6%. However, rapes have only decreased by 1%, while the national rate has dropped by 9%.

In line with the national average of 5% for serious assaults, Portland saw a 6% decrease.

A key issue in the upcoming election is crime.

President Biden released a statement acknowledging the American Rescue Plan, which provided $15 billion for public safety and violence prevention programs nationwide.
