Cameras at Mount Pisgah appear to deter crime, Lane County officials say

Lane County Parks installed cameras at Mount Pisgah, the county's most popular recreation area, in May, and since then, the number of car break-ins has dropped dramatically.

Lane County Parks reports that crime has decreased at its most visited recreation area, Mount Pisgah, since security measures were implemented.

Brett Henry, director of the county parks division, said they usually get one or two car break-ins reported per week, but since they installed cameras in May, they've only had two.

“So we've seen a definite improvement in safety out there and it's really visible,” Henry said. “You can see the cameras and there's signage saying there are cameras. So we think that all helps a little bit.”

The cameras are positioned at the main entrance and in the main parking lot. Another camera will soon be installed at the northern trailhead.

Henry said the county has also contracted with a security company to monitor the park on its busiest days. These security measures will be implemented by the voter-approved Lane County Parks raise.

Mount Pisgah welcomes between 300,000 and 400,000 visitors annually.
