Family suffers from accident in which father and grandfather died

Community members rallied support for the family's surviving teenagers, who are now in the care of their grandmother.

BORING, Oregon – Family members of a father and son killed in a car crash in Clackamas County are grateful for the community's help.

“Everyone knew her or knew someone who knew her,” Jayden Brenner said of her father, 41-year-old Jonathan Brenner, and her grandfather, 81-year-old Larry Brenner. “They were very close. We all lived together.”

On Saturday around 9 p.m., Clackamas County Sheriff's officers responded to a crash near Southeast Lusted Road and Southeast Dodge Park Boulevard in Boring, where they found Jonathan and Larry Brenner dead. They had been struck and killed by a car while walking home from a neighbor's house.

Deputies said the driver stopped at the scene of the accident. No charges have been filed so far and the case remains under investigation.

Jonathan worked as a groundskeeper at Mt. Hood Community College and loved the outdoors. Jayden recalled that he often rescued ducklings from the overflow of a pond on campus. Larry was a retired mechanic who had served in the U.S. Navy. He loved the outdoors, hiking, and was passionate about gardening and the chickens he kept.

Jayden, 18, said she and her 16-year-old brother lost their mother four years ago and now only their grandmother is left to look after and care for them.

“It’s definitely a lot considering how much we’ve lost in just a few years,” Jayden said.

A family friend has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with expenses.

“It's been so helpful,” Jayden said. “Now we just need to be in people's minds.”

Jayden also hopes that people will think about how they drive and remember that people's lives are at stake.

“I hope this raises some awareness of how dangerous these roads are,” Jayden said. “The speed limit on many of these back roads is 45, and most people we see are doing 60 or 70.”

As officials continue to investigate the accident, Jayden is trying to stay strong for her family. Things are different now, but the memories of her father and grandfather remain.

“(My dad) always supported me and my brother in our interests and put so much effort into it,” Jayden said. “It's great to be able to share more about them and who they were, at least for us.”
