Katy Perry will receive the 2024 MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award

Katy Perry's cheers were heard at the MTV VMAs, and now they responded with a pop culture award of the highest order.

After a 16-year career that has seen him release iconic music videos and No. 1 singles, Perry will receive the 2024 MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award at the upcoming ceremony, the network announced Thursday.

Perry will also deliver a career-spanning performance of her biggest hits at the VMAs at the UBS Arena in New York.

Memorable videos from Perry's discography include the video for her mainstream hit debut, “I Kissed a Girl,” in 2008, followed by a series of generation-defining videos from “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream” to “Firework,” “Last Friday Night,” “Roar” and “Dark Horse.”

In recent years, Perry has also launched big-budget, celebrity-studded video extravaganzas for singles such as “Swish Swish” and “Chained to the Rhythm,” which featured support from Nicki Minaj.

The 39-year-old has five MTV VMA wins in the past and even hosted the 2017 ceremony. She has also performed at the annual event several times.

Perry's list of videos grew by two in 2024, with the release of her comeback single “Woman's World” and its follow-up 143 Album excerpt “Lifetimes” last week. Both tracks precede the singer's sixth mainstream studio album, which is due out on September 20th.

According to a press release, Perry's works have been streamed over 115 billion times to date and over 70 million albums have been sold worldwide. Her music videos have also been viewed around 27 billion times.

Beginning with the release of “California Gurls” in 2010, Perry led a remarkable streak in the US charts, with this song and four subsequent Teenage dream Album excerpts all reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The 2024 MTV VMAs will air on September 11th at 8 p.m. on MTV.
