UPDATE Coroner: Sunbury man killed in shooting outside Northumberland County Courthouse | News

SUNBURY – A Sunbury man was killed in a shooting near the Northumberland County Courthouse Thursday.

Montour County Coroner Scott Lynn said Dayveon Creel of Sunbury was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest.

Lynn said Creel was taken by ambulance from the scene to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Creel was taken from the scene more than 30 minutes after the incident occurred around noon, just hours after an attempted murder trial began in the city.

Sunbury Police held a press conference at 4:30 p.m. to update the public on the situation.

Police confirmed that the shooter is not in custody.

Second Street and the Weis Markets parking lot are now open. Police had cordoned off the street for two blocks near the courthouse, parking lot and First National Bank while they investigated. Market Street remained open.

The trial for attempted murder began in court on Thursday.

O'Donnell said the attempted murder trial of Anthony Moultrie and Franky Riche, which began Thursday, was ruled a mistrial because of Thursday's shooting. Both are charged with attempted murder stemming from an incident in June 2022 that is related to a murder that occurred a month earlier.

Thursday's shooting occurred shortly after the trial's lunch break. The courthouse was locked down and closed for the rest of the day, according to the Administrative Office of the Pennsylvania Courts.

Before the ambulance left for the hospital, a crowd gathered at the scene of the accident to pray while police and paramedics arrived.

This is a developing story. More details will be released as they become available.
