10 prescription drugs are becoming cheaper

LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, prices for ten prescription drugs covered by Medicare will fall.

This means that some of the most common medications cost less out of pocket.

The bill was introduced by Democrats two years ago. It is the Democrats' most important measure to make life-saving drugs more affordable.

Michigan State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou said the Inflation Reduction Act gave Medicare the ability to negotiate prescription drug prices, which helped lower the prices of those drugs.

Republicans also want to reduce the cost of prescription drugs by ensuring that Medicare is used only by those who have paid for it.

“They have invested in Medicare their entire lives and expect this program to still be available to them when they reach retirement age, their golden years,” said Pete Hoekstra, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party.

Ultimately, every group is interested in falling prices, but the ways to achieve this are different.

Ingham County's medical examiner said lowering prescription drug prices could help close the gap that can be created by people having difficulty paying for their medications.

“Some people have costs so high that they have to worry about their medications, their rent, their mortgage, their transportation or even their groceries,” says Dr. Nike Shoyinka, Ingham County’s medical health officer.

Dr. Shoyinka hopes Medicare patients will no longer have to choose between life-saving medicine and food.
