The civil lawsuit against former Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon is scheduled to go to trial in June 2025.

The incident stems from a shooting in March 2023 when a group of teenagers were playing “Nerf Wars” near Mixon's home when, according to police, another man, Lamonte Brewer, fired a gun, hitting one of the teenagers in the foot.

A search warrant was executed for surveillance footage from Mixon's home that, according to the prosecution, shows Brewer in Mixon's backyard firing several shots at the teenager.

The teenager's family sued Mixon, claiming he supplied Brewer with the gun and ammunition despite knowing about his criminal past.

In a new brief released Tuesday by Mixon's defense team, his lawyers said both Mixon and Brewer were in the yard with guns, but Mixon was unaware of Brewer's criminal record.

The lawyers also said that Brewer was not working for Mixon at the time and that Mixon did not remember speaking to the teenagers before the shooting.

Joe Mixon has not been criminally charged in the shooting. Brewer will face federal charges and his trial is not scheduled to begin until September at the earliest.

Joe's sister, Shalonda Mixon, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice. She admitted that she tried to hide shell casings from the gun in question.

At the time of the shooting, Brewer was dating Shalonda Mixon. She was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to her role in the shooting.

Mixon no longer plays for the Bengals after the organization traded him to the Houston Texans in March.
