In the wake of nationwide unrest, suspects of violent riots could face even more serious charges after a 15-year-old boy was charged with rioting for the first time.

The teenager appeared before South Tyneside Youth Court on a charge of disturbing the peace in Sunderland, but his case was adjourned following the “surprise” charge.

The maximum sentence for sedition is 10 years in prison, double the sentence for violent riots. Prosecutors are considering adding even broader sedition charges.

In Manchester, 30-year-old Joseph Ley, who punched and kicked a black man in the face, was sentenced to three years and two months in prison.

Paul Smith, 21, who threw bricks at police outside an asylum seekers' hotel, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison.

Oliver Chapman, 23, who performed a spinning kick against a shop window in the city, was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Tom Neblett, 20, was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Liverpool Crown Court after climbing into a van and repeatedly firing projectiles at police.

46-year-old father of six Tony Hazlett was sentenced to 28 months in prison after throwing two projectiles at police officers.

According to the National Police Chiefs Council, 1,127 people have been arrested and 648 charged in connection with the violence.

Father of three children photographed at ‘aggressive’ protest

A father of three has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for violent disorder after taking part in a right-wing extremist demonstration in Weymouth.

Ian Vetier, 36, from Weymouth, played a “prominent” role in what he described as the “Enough is Enough” group, which came together to counter a larger “Stand Up To Racism” group, Bournemouth Crown Court heard.

He admitted the crime in connection with the demonstration on August 4.

The court was told that police officers feared for their safety as they tried to control the protest group, which was shouting and swearing loudly.

Painter who joined mob in hotel attack sentenced to more than two years in prison

A painter and decorator who was part of a mob that attacked a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.

Billy Pemberton, 31, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday, South Yorkshire Police confirmed.

His case had been adjourned from Wednesday when Sheffield District Judge Jeremy Richardson KC heard that Pemberton was part of a group who threw projectiles at a small group of “cornered” police officers outside the hotel; but there was no evidence he had thrown anything at the officers himself.

The court heard he was also seen in a group chanting “Who the hell is Allah?”

Pemberton picked up a police baton dropped by an officer and took it to a pub where he boasted about it, the court heard.

Defence lawyer Gordon Stables said his client was “completely devastated and remorseful” and faced the loss of his business, which employs three people, as a result of the prison sentence.

Pemberton, of Rosehill Road, Rawmarsh, admitted at an earlier hearing that violent disturbances had occurred.

More than 60 officers were injured as they battled hundreds of people outside the hotel in the Manvers district; some gained access to the building and tried to set it on fire with a burning barrel.

Father of six sentenced to more than two years in prison for attacking police

A father of six who admitted violent disorder was sentenced to 28 months in prison.

CCTV footage shown at Liverpool Crown Court shows 46-year-old Tony Hazlett throwing two projectiles at police officers in Southport on July 30.

Prosecutor Chris Taylor said Hazlett threw two objects, possibly bricks, in quick succession.

The court heard he had 15 previous convictions for 44 offences, including a 26-month prison sentence imposed on him in 2011 for affray, possession of an offensive weapon and breaching the conditions of a suspended sentence.

Stuart Nolan, defending, said: “He apologises to the people of Southport, members of Merseyside Police and the wider public. He accepts that this was inexcusable behaviour.”
