PART-TIME WORKERS HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN UNDERSERVED IN RETAIL, says Bob Selle, vice president and director of human resources and risk management at Ocean State Job Lot. That's not the case at the North Kingstown-based retailer, where two-thirds of employees work part-time. Anyone who works 20 hours a week will be offered Accolade Care, a concierge service launching in 2023 that will provide free virtual access to primary care physicians and mental health counselors, Selle says.

“We see the effectiveness of the program in a lower absenteeism rate and our overall healthcare spending is going down,” he said. “We also survey employees and recognize the importance of the physical and emotional safety of employees working in stores to identify trends in the workforce.”

In autumn, stress levels rise, which is why Job Lot places great importance on relief.

“If someone is having a hard time finding daycare, we have resources to identify and verify their availability,” Selle said. “If you don't have happy people, you don't have happy customers.”
