Vikings QB out for entire rookie season

JJ McCarthy's rookie season is over before it even really began.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback will miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing full meniscus surgery on Wednesday, head coach Kevin O'Connell announced.

McCarthy, who was selected No. 10 overall in the NFL Draft in April after leading Michigan to the national championship, was unable to participate in practice Monday after playing in the season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday.

On Tuesday, O'Connell said the quarterback would need surgery. Until McCarthy's surgery, however, it was not clear whether a full repair would be needed or just a trimmed leg, which would have allowed him to return this season.
