Gas leak in Kirkwood paralyzes traffic on Big Bend Road

KIRKWOOD, Missouri – Authorities responded to a gas leak in Kirkwood Thursday afternoon that caused traffic closures along Big Bend Road.

Kirkwood police responded to a “major gas leak” around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Six Spire trucks arrived at the scene to begin cleanup and investigation operations.

“We are aware that a third party has damaged one of our gas lines, so we are immediately on site to begin work and repair the line,” said Molly Rose, public relations manager at Spire.

Citizens reported to FOX 2 off camera that they experienced headaches and dizziness while in the area.

Big Bend Road remains closed between South Fillmore Road and South Kirkwood Road. Police say traffic will be detoured at the intersection of South Fillmore and Milwaukee.

As of 5 p.m., Spire says the accident scene is safe and the leak is isolated. However, the road will remain closed for several hours. Motorists are asked to avoid the area until the accident scene is cleared.

“We are grateful to the Kirkwood Fire Department for being here and keeping the lanes closed so our crews can work safely and make repairs quickly,” Rose said.

FOX 2 has reached out to the City of Kirkwood and the Kirkwood Fire Department for comment but has not received a response.
