The first hours of the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation on August 6, 2024 will go down in the history of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Careful preparation, planning, the element of surprise, morale and silence of information were crucial in the initial stages of the operation. A lesson was learned from the failed counteroffensive in June 2023.

It is the largest foreign attack on Russian territory since World War II, and although Moscow officials claim the incursion has stabilized, images shared on social media in recent days suggest otherwise.

The Air Assault Forces Command stressed: “From now on, everything depends on the resilience of Ukrainian soldiers of all branches of the armed forces participating in the operation.” The Ukrainian armed forces have taken control of over a thousand square kilometers of the Kursk region, with 78 settlements under Ukrainian control as of August 15, 2024.

On August 15, President Volodymyr Zelensky chaired a meeting of the General Staff of the Supreme Commander, where it was announced the creation of a military command in the controlled areas of the Kursk region, with Major General Eduard Moskalev appointed as its head.

According to the British newspaper The Independent, Ukrainian forces captured about 2,000 Russian soldiers during the operation in the Kursk region.

Currently, the Russians have a serious problem with these foreign forces conducting deep-reaching operations and striving to halt the advance of the Ukrainian forces. However, given the estimated losses, it is possible that this operation is the only one the Ukrainians can conduct in the short term. It is unlikely that the captured territories of this incursion into Kursk Oblast will not be recaptured by the Russians in the long term. Russia cannot allow any part, albeit a small one compared to the size of the territory, to remain at the behest of a nation that is officially an enemy of Russia.

Therefore, it is expected that this movement will make Russia's actions more violent and incisive in order to gain an advantageous negotiating position. Peace negotiations are a hypothesis that is gaining momentum over time.
