Florida man Omar Rodriguez killed a neighbor over dog feces and attacked the victim's wife in a Miami courtroom

A Florida man, in a wild outburst of anger, shouted in the courtroom that his neighbor had been “crying like a baby” in front of the man's widow and explaining why he had killed him. The incident was caught on camera.

Omar Rodriguez was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday after being found guilty of premeditated murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting death of Jose Rey in June 2015.

As Rey's widow, Lissette, read a statement at the hearing, Rodriguez rose from his chair and began screaming, causing several people in the courtroom to gasp.

“The coward was your husband,” Rodriguez screamed, according to a video obtained by NBC Miami. “That's why I killed him… he was crying like a baby.”

Several police officers dragged Rodriguez out of the courtroom and locked him in a holding cell while he continued to scream angrily.

Moments earlier, Lissette Rey had pleaded with Miami-Dade District Court Judge Milton Hirsch to give Rodriguez the maximum sentence.

“I beg your honor, the coward, the murderer will receive the harshest punishment,” she said.

After Rodriguez was led away, handcuffed and dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, Rey continued her testimony as the killer's voice echoed throughout the courthouse.

“I wish the death penalty had been on the table, but at the end of the day, Mr. Rodriguez will still be able to see his family, they will be able to see him, I will never see my husband again,” Lissette Rey said. “I didn't really listen to what he said, I tuned him out, I just read my mind. His words are irrelevant. He is irrelevant in my life right now. He is scum.”

The jury had ruled out the possibility of the death penalty in the Rodriguez case, leaving Hirsch with only the option of life imprisonment with a minimum of 25 years. The 75-year-old will therefore remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

Even though Rodriguez did not give the sentence that Lissette Rey expected, she still did not wish well for her husband's killer.

“I pray he spends the rest of his miserable life in prison,” the grieving wife told the judge, according to the Miami Herald. “He's a narcissistic piece of shit.”

Jose Rey, 52, was walking in his Kendall neighborhood when his dog crouched down on Rodriguez's son's lawn.

Neighbors told police they heard two men arguing loudly before Rey threatened to come back and fight him.

Rey had dropped off his dog at home and continued walking with his wife when they were confronted by a shirtless Rodriguez, the outlet reported.

Jose Rey was shot three times and Rodriguez threatened Lissette, who was comforting her husband.

Rey succumbed to his injuries more than a week later.

Rodriguez had sought immunity in the case under Florida's so-called “Stand Your Ground” law, but in 2021 a judge ruled that he did not believe Rodriguez acted in self-defense, according to WTVJ.

The convicted killer claimed Rey threatened him with a knife, but prosecutors argued Rodriguez tried to force the knife into his victim's hand.

Rodriguez was accused of mistreating his neighbors, one of whom wrote to then-governor Lawton Chiles that the man had declared “war” on his neighbors and once threatened a lawn care worker with a machete.

“This guy treated the neighborhoods and everything else so badly, he got what he deserved,” Sergio Garcia told the Miami Herald after the verdict.

“I wish the death penalty had been up for debate,” Garcia's wife added. “At least then he'll be behind bars and won't be able to hurt anyone anymore.”
