Barcelona insiders are angry with the club over recent leaks – “I don’t believe the club anymore”

Barcelona have tested the faith of their fans in recent years and now, for the third summer in a row, the drama surrounding player signings looks set to drag on into the final days of the transfer window. This is despite president Joan Laporta declaring in early July that the club would stay within its salary cap again this year and claiming it could afford to sign players such as Nico Williams.

Williams would have cost Barcelona €62 million to activate his release clause, the same price paid by RB Leipzig's Dani Olmo if all his targets were met. On Friday, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick confirmed that Olmo would miss the club's season debut against Valencia due to fitness issues, but he is not yet registered in La Liga.

Speaking to one of his regular correspondents on Jijantes, Gerard Romero questioned not only the club's actions but also the information that is leaking out.

“I don't believe the club at the moment. It's time for me to just stop believing them and I feel that way, I'm sorry, Lluis. I feel that way because the club is not meeting the deadlines they have set over the last few months. And I don't want to fall into the trap of creating a fuss about players who could come if you spend the whole damn summer not cleaning out the squad and then you're left with a watery throat on August 14.”

“If the players are in the squad on Saturday, we will not congratulate them because they are doing the work they should have done. And not in the deadlines they should have done. If the players are registered, we should praise the sporting director. [Deco] – you can play with my balls.”

“Because he will have done his job at a time when he should have done it, and not on August 14, when we are up to our necks in water and have to wait and see whether we register players or not.”

Romero's angry rant ended with the accusation that the club's members were mercenaries.

“Now I'm not speaking as a journalist or a communicator of Gerard Romero, but as a fan of Gerard Romero, Barcelona. As someone who feels the importance of the badge. And I have the feeling that the people in the club don't feel the colors of Barcelona, but the color of the banknotes.”

Meanwhile, Romero is not the only one who has lost his composure. One of Sport and Gol's more experienced correspondents, David Bernabeu Reverter, was equally disdainful of the club when speaking about Nico Williams.

“Barcelona are not making a fool of themselves by not signing Nico. Barcelona are making a fool of themselves by leaking and verbalising over the last few months that they were within their salary cap at this point in time with the 1:1 rule. And not only are they not adhering to the 1:1 rule, they can't even sign players. Not even their big signing Dani Olmo.”

“This is the third year in a row of drama. It means that Joan Laporta still has to do his homework three and a half years after taking office as president. That's the problem.”

Although RadioMarca's Nacho Pena is not a Barcelona insider or closely associated with the club, he too took the opportunity to comment on the Blaugrana when Nico Williams made his seasonal debut for Athletic on Thursday night.

“Summer after summer we see what Barça's plan is… Wouldn't it be better for Nico Williams to stay at Barça and watch the clock to see if they sign him for tomorrow?”

“I would like to believe that there are many Cules who have the Blaugrana Seny [sensibleness]. This thoughtful and self-critical Seny. I have spoken to more and more Barca fans who are really on the verge of madness. What I accuse them of is their inertia. They have to take to the streets and demand that they become a respectable club again, because at the moment they are a laughing stock.”

At the time of writing, experienced defender Inigo Martinez was registered ahead of the clash with Valencia, but Olmo, Vitor Roque, Pablo Torre, Pau Victor and Alex Valle were not.
