You had a job: Outlook, Word and OneNote can “close unexpectedly while typing,” says Microsoft

Software bugs are a fact of life. With the increasing complexity of many modern programs, it's no surprise that with today's feature-packed applications, something will go wrong at some point. However, if the primary purpose of an app is to process text, you'd hope that simply typing wouldn't cause it to close.

According to Microsoft, this exact issue affects certain installations of Outlook, Word, and OneNote, and the Outlook and Office teams are currently investigating (via Neowin). In a support post, MS defines the issue as follows:

“After updating to [Office] Version 2407 Build 17830.20138 or later: You notice that Outlook, Word, or OneNote may close unexpectedly while you are typing or performing other authoring tasks such as spell checking.”

Yes, even the simple act of typing or spell checking can cause applications to close, no doubt leading to an assortment of swear words from affected users. Microsoft says you can confirm the issue by looking for Event 1000 or Event 1001 in the Application log of Windows Event Viewer, and that the problem may be caused by older language packs:

“The name of the faulty module depends on the language packs installed. For example, mscss7it.dll for Italian or mscss7ge.dll for German. Other possible names are: EN, ES, FR, GE, IT, NP, PB.”

Currently, MS recommends a workaround that includes an online repair of the affected Office application, finding and uninstalling old Office language installations, and reinstalling the Language Accessory Pack for Microsoft 365.

Affected users are also directed to a thread on the Microsoft forums where several users report that their Outlook installations crash when simply typing, saving drafts, and typing in different languages - both in the Windows version and the Android application.

Many of the users in the thread report that they were typing (or spell-checking) in German when the issue occurred, although according to the support post, MS seems to believe that multiple languages could cause the affected apps to close.

I guess Notepad won a point, even though you can't send email with the app I refer to internally as “Ol' Reliable.” Still, it has a surprisingly good spell checker and several useful features these days, and it has never crashed on me while taking notes. Sometimes the classics are the best, right?
