Four family members die in car crash in Texas after suspected street racing

Four family members were killed in a traffic accident in Texas last weekend. Two other men are accused of causing the accident by street racing.

The incident occurred on a Grand Prairie road around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday. According to a news release from Grand Prairie police, local investigators believe the driver of a red Dodge Charger, identified as 20-year-old Jaime Mesa, was “traveling at a high rate of speed” when he raced another person in a white Dodge Charger.

While driving on Belt Line Road and turning left onto Kingston Drive, a Chevy Traverse SUV collided with the red Dodge Charger. The impact sent the SUV careening into a gas station parking lot, where it landed on its side and caught fire.

Three occupants of the SUV died at the scene of the accident, two others were taken to the hospital, where a fourth victim died. The fifth victim was in critical condition, according to police and an online fundraiser for the family.

Mesa was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He has since been taken into police custody and charged with four counts of racing resulting in death, four counts of manslaughter, one count of racing resulting in serious bodily harm and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Anthony Morales, the 22-year-old driver of the white Dodge Charger Daytona who fled the area after the crash, was also arrested and charged with one count of racing on a highway resulting in serious bodily injury and four counts of racing on a highway resulting in death, the release said.

Good Samaritans rescue victims from fiery accident

After the devastating crash, witnesses stopped to help Mesa, who was trapped in the red Dodge Charger. One of those Good Samaritans told Fox4 how he worked with others to pull Mesa out of the Dodge Charger. Miguel Coronado described how the steering wheel was pressed into Mesa's chest, making it difficult for him to breathe.

Police arrived shortly after Mesa was pulled from the vehicle. Paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene one to two minutes later.

“I wish I could have helped, you know, with the other car,” Coronado told Fox4, referring to the SUV containing the family.

“It's very sad,” Coronado said, visibly upset. He said the tragedy made him think of his seven-month-old daughter. “Life has changed in an instant.”

Other witnesses spoke to NBC DFW and recalled the traumatic scene. Yvette Acosta said she heard screams coming from one of the vehicles.

“I haven't been able to sleep well because of it,” she said. “I can hear it, and just seeing them and not being able to help them is very devastating.”

Ashik Maharzan worked at the gas station where the SUV ended up after the crash. He said it was “the craziest day” of his life.

“I heard a loud bang coming from there and when I looked I saw two people flying out the window,” he said. “I couldn't sleep for two or three hours, I couldn't sleep. The fire was in my mind for several hours.”

The victims were identified as members of the Rosales family – father Jessie, mother Lorena and siblings Stephanie (13) and Angel (6), according to local broadcaster WFAA, which spoke to a family member.

The fifth victim to survive the accident was 17-year-old Anthony Rosales, who was in critical condition.

A GoFundMe campaign for the victims has raised over $68,000 as of Friday morning. The online fundraiser aims to raise money for Anthony, the remaining family member, as well as funeral expenses.

“This sweet group of siblings has a long, hard road ahead of them physically, emotionally and financially,” the fundraiser continued.
