Owner of the Milwaukee Brewers allegedly stole sand from Malibu beach

Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has been accused of stealing sand. Yes, sand that can be found on thousands of beaches around the world. But Attanasio is not accused of stealing sand from any ordinary beach; he is accused of stealing sand from a beach in Malibu, according to a lawsuit filed by a neighbor.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the billionaire owner is accused of stealing sand from Broad Beach in Malibu and bringing it to his house for a private construction project.

The lawsuit, filed by Attanasio's neighbor James Kohlberg, alleges that Attanasio used dredges on public natural property, restricting public access to the beach while exposing local marine life to the heavy machinery's potentially dangerous byproducts, causing public and private nuisances and violating the California Coastal Act.

“This case involves a private property owner using a public beach as his personal sandbox and disturbingly converting a public natural resource (that is, Broad Beach sand) for the personal, private use of a nearby homeowner,” the lawsuit states.

Kohlberg also claims he “suffered personal harm, including having sand mined adjacent to and in front of his own property and being exposed to gasoline oil on the beach and in the water in front of plaintiff's property.” The plaintiff is asking the court to order the defendant to return all of the sand from Broad Beach, repair all damage, and pay fines.

Attanasio's attorney, Kenneth Ehrlich, says his client is having a damaged section of his home's seawall repaired and has complied with all permits from the City of Malibu and Los Angeles County.

Attanasio bought his Broad Beach home in 2007 for $23 million.
