Zach Wilson is showing progress and could challenge Jarrett Stidham for the job as backup quarterback

Let's get this out of the way right now. After what Bo Nix did in the season opener and today against the Packers during their joint practice, he is the Broncos' starting quarterback heading into week one. Nothing is official yet, but the competition is over and the rookie has earned it.

Now the question is, who will be Bo Nix's replacement and will the Broncos keep all three quarterbacks on the roster? Jarrett Stidham, a favorite of Sean Payton, has been the starting quarterback all offseason, but is his spot on the roster potentially in jeopardy? Reports from camp suggest that's a possibility. Multiple reports, including Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright of KOA, suggest Wilson is pressuring Stidham for the Broncos' backup quarterback job.

According to multiple reports, Wilson is becoming more and more comfortable in Payton's offense and the former No. 2 pick is reportedly “recharged and motivated” to prove the doubters wrong.

Wilson was asked about this after today's practice and told reporters that he loves a good change of scenery and that he believes it will do him good. He went on to say that he enjoys being here with this coaching staff and team.

“Yes, of course. I love a good change of scenery. I think it's done me good. I'm looking forward to continuing to do my best. I enjoy being here and being around this coaching staff and team.”

Aside from feeling more comfortable and enjoying the change of scenery, his play has really improved over the past few weeks. At the start of training camp, he was clearly the Broncos' third-best quarterback, but as the days and weeks have gone by, he's closed the gap and could challenge Stidham for the backup quarterback job.

Stidham has been good and steady throughout training camp, but both Nix and Wilson have improved as training camp has gone on. Nix seems to have overtaken Stidham as the starter, and now the question is, will Wilson now overtake Stidham as the backup quarterback?

Payton noted that Stidham will play on the second team this week while Wilson will be back on the third team, but Wilson still has a chance to shine. He'll be going up against the Packers' third-stringers, who are at the bottom of the roster, and has a chance to really wear them down. He'll also likely play at least one half in the finale against the Cardinals, so if he has two strong performances, he'll make things difficult for the Broncos' coaches and decision-makers.

In addition to his improvement and better offensive ability, Wilson is also a younger and cheaper option who has excellent shooting talent and the potential to be a secondary pick. He's no longer with the Jets, and since they have by far the best coaches they've ever had, it would make sense for them to move on Wilson going forward.

Still, I think the Broncos will keep all three quarterbacks. Payton has been very positive about Stidham and made it a priority to sign him last offseason. He has taken to the offense well and can run it smoothly when needed. He is a reliable backup option for a team going with a rookie quarterback, which is always good. Wilson offers more potential but is a riskier backup due to his poor playing history and is still a rehab project for Payton and the Broncos. However, reports say the Broncos don't want to let Wilson go, so the chances of keeping all three increase.

With Nix likely named the starter next week, all eyes will be on Stidham and Wilson. Who gets the backup quarterback job and will they keep all three quarterbacks or could one be traded? If one goes, Stidham is probably the underdog, but we'll see. Ultimately, I think they keep all three, but we'll find out after the Broncos' final game of the season next week against the Cardinals.
