New Jersey film awards contribute to records for Deadpool and Wolverine

The blockbuster of 2024 was “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Marvel Studios’ highest-grossing film since “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which grossed $1.9 billion.

The action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is the highest grossing R-rated film of all time ($1.3 billion). The film earned its R rating thanks to excessive violence, vulgar humor and over-the-top satire.

But movie tickets are more expensive today, having risen 77 percent over the past 20 years. The average ticket price in the United States is $10.78, meaning that around 120.5 million tickets were sold for Deadpool & Wolverine.

For comparison: In 2003, “The Matrix Reloaded” grossed $741.8 million at the box office. Since the average ticket price was $6.03 over 20 years ago, 123 million tickets were sold for the sequel to the famous science fiction action film “The Matrix.”

Where New Jersey has some of the most expensive ticket prices in America

The research team at NetCredit collected data from the National Association of Theatre Owners to find out the most expensive and cheapest movie tickets.

New Jersey is the tenth most expensive place in the United States. With an average ticket price of $13.83, a movie ticket for two adults plus a large portion of popcorn at the theater will cost approximately $35.

Research by NetCredit found that 30 of the 50 U.S. states have higher average movie ticket prices compared to the national median movie ticket prices. Movie tickets are more expensive in states near large bodies of water than in states that do not border large bodies of water.
