14 vape shops accused of selling to minors in Loudoun County raids – NBC4 Washington

Public concern led to an action in which 14 companies were fined for selling e-cigarettes to people under 21, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff.

Concerns from parents and teachers led to a two-day operation targeting 32 tobacco and e-cigarette stores, the sheriff said.

“These kids are going into vape shops and buying these products,” said Sheriff Mike Chapman. “It's just not good. Parents are concerned about it. We're concerned about it. That's why we wanted to make sure our operation had teeth.”

If an employee violates the law, the company will be penalized, plus a $100 fine for the employee.

A change in Virginia law recently increased the penalty:

  • First offense: $1,000
  • Second offense: $5,000
  • Third offense: $10,000

“So this legislation needs to be taken seriously,” Chapman said.

In case of repeated violations, the company's license may also be revoked or suspended.

The violations are considered civil and not criminal offenses.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among American teenagers.
