Man who worked for 40 years loses his job shortly before retirement – debate about loyalty sparked

Respect in the workplace is a right of every employee. With years and dedicated services, this respect gradually grows. However, companies often take advantage of their employees and use them only for as long as they need. u/DriverOk9165 shared the tragic news that her father was fired after 40 years of dedicated services. She also mentioned that her father was about to retire but even then, he was fired mercilessly by his company. The father had worked for the company as a branch manager his entire life. “My father was extremely loyal for decades and now that he is less than a decade away from retirement, he was told two weeks before Christmas that his branch is closing and they will not transfer him to another branch,” the post read.

She also mentioned that the closure would happen within a month. The post further explained that the father's job, which requires him to lift heavy loads, has been damaging his physical health. “The only silver lining is that CVS can't just cancel their health insurance immediately, which is great considering he recently had surgery and will likely need another surgery soon,” the post said. The father worked two jobs to provide for the family, and just recently he had quit one of the jobs and was fired from his current job as well. The father has had a tough time financially since he was a child.

The post mentioned that he grew up in poverty and worked menial jobs from the age of six. “As a teenager he dug graves and got by. He studied for a few years before having to drop out to support his family. He wanted to be a writer. He even wrote a book for the family and it's hilarious,” the post said. “It's just cruel that he worked so hard his whole life and had it all taken away from him when the finish line was in sight,” the daughter added.

She also shared a heartbreaking incident that proved the father's dedication to his job. It read, “A few years ago my dad posted on Facebook that a country music artist he loved was coming to town. It said, 'If I didn't have to close the store tonight I would be there,' and I commented on the post telling him to just close the store early and go anyway. What difference does 2 hours make?” The dad's response to the comment was deeply touching. “He laughed it off and said something about the need for a good work ethic. Look where a good work ethic got him and don't make the same mistakes he did. They will use you until you break and throw you away because you cost too much,” the post concluded. u/compost-me said, “I'm so sorry to hear your dad is going through this.” u/newwriter365 said, “It sounds like he's the type of person who is fiercely independent. And CVS takes advantage of that.”
