Cozmo has also announced his upcoming fall U.S. tour, which will include dates at Brooklyn Made in New York, Underground Arts in Philadelphia, Schubas Tavern in Chicago, and Wonder Bar in Asbury Park. Tickets go on sale this Friday, August 9, at 10 a.m. ET.

Cozmo made an honest statement with the release, revealing that his wife was the inspiration behind his esoteric lyrics.

“My wife was the singer in a band called 'Apocalipstick' (a brilliant name), which inspired the line 'She was a singer in a punk band when she came to me.'” Mondo explained, adding: “She lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I took the train from Philly and stayed with her in those early days. I didn't like the city – it was dirty and intimidating and I'm too polite to really get involved in it. In one of my silly books there's a poem by David Henderson describing a funeral procession for a deceased playwright. In the second verse he wrote, 'They scatter your ashes all over the Lower East Side.' She underlined that passage in red and wrote 'scatter me in the Lower East Side.' So I added in the second verse, 'I remember when you said scatter me across the streets, in the Lower East of the mansions and time machines.' That thought led me to insert the line 'All die on the battlefield' into the chorus.”

Mondo Cozmo, also known as Josh Ostrander, began his career as part of the bands Laguardia and then the trio Eastern Conference Champions. The latter had a certain success, with a song on the dusk Soundtrack. But that wasn't enough for the Philadelphia native. The band soon broke up and Ostrander began recording under the name Mondo Cozmo. Now he was on his own and did everything he could to survive and be successful with his music. He slept on couches and saved money wherever he could. Like all good things, success came after many years of hard work.

Cozmo has released a number of acclaimed albums, including the critically acclaimed Plastic soulwhich earned him the number one single “Shine” and helped him find fans from Butch Vig to Bruce Springsteen, who took his songwriting to a new level. New York Times Article. He's landed and lost major label deals and opened for just about every band in America. Then he went independent, released more critically acclaimed albums, and in a fit of frustration punched a pane of glass and nearly ended his career.

Various obstacles like this drove Cozmo on a transformative journey. He took bold steps, splitting from his manager of 15 years and immersing himself in the world of acclaimed producers and engineers. Thanks to the power of social media, he connected with Mark Rankin (Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop, Weezer, Florence and the Machine). After some preliminary work, sending files back and forth, they headed to Cozmo's studio near Lake Arrowhead.

When Cozmo/Ostrander wrote the songs for the album, the impending death of his dog Cozmo weighed heavily on him and served as an inspiration. Sensing that Cozmo's time was running out, Ostrander spent more time with him and even brought him into the studio with him during recording. Many of the album's lyrics deal with impending death and the emotions he was experiencing at the time.

Throughout the process, Cozmo was aware that he had to make a succinct and focused record, but he had an unprecedented creative spark. He wrote 70 songs. The centerpiece and title track, “It's PRINCIPLE!” is based on an abstract and captivating lyric: “So I'm slashing tires on Main Street America.” The song almost didn't make the cut. Since it was one of the earlier songs Ostrander had recorded, he immediately felt regret after sending the song with Rankin. He almost deleted the song before Rankin responded to him and said the song should lead off the album. He decided that this would be his beacon to trust the opinions of the people around him that he respected.

Fueled by newfound confidence and determination through positive collaborations with industry heavy hitters, the album is the swaggering roar of an artist who has no more shit to give and is all the better for it. Previously released single 'Angels' is a wall-of-sound rock epic with punchy lyrics. 'Sundown In An Age Of Fear' is more abstract but contains a sophisticated energy that is hard to describe but captivating to the core.

Ultimately, Mondo Cozmo's fourth studio album is his most complete and vulnerable work. Rather than an end, it marks a new beginning. Not many artists are lucky enough to successfully hit the reset button. But that is exactly what It is PRINCIPLE is: an artist who has been through a lot, takes a big step and follows up with an album that he believes he made for himself, but it would be nice if other people liked it too.

Cozmo comes to the conclusion, “I think I made this record for myself. I mean, I didn't play demos to anyone who absolutely didn't need to be involved. And I don't really care if anyone likes it. I mean, it's lovely if they like it, but I think I put up this wall as a defense mechanism to protect the creative spirit. Maybe that's what Rick Rubin really meant when he said, 'Make music for yourself.'”
