George Santos is expected to plead guilty at a hearing before the fraud trial

CENTRAL ISLIP (WABC) — George Santos is expected to plead guilty during a hearing Monday in federal court on Long Island, sources familiar with the case told ABC News, while warning that the erratic former Republican congressman could change his mind at any time.

A guilty plea would prevent the trial, which is scheduled to begin next month. Hundreds of potential jurors have already been summoned.

Calls seeking comment to Santos, his lawyer and federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York were not returned.

Santos, who was expelled from the House of Representatives, faces 23 charges, including defrauding donors, lying about his finances and accepting unemployment benefits without reason.

It was not immediately clear what charges Santos would plead to or what sentence he would receive.

Santos is accused of misrepresenting details of his past and biography while campaigning for parts of Queen's and Nassau County, but the charges to which he pleads not guilty are primarily about money.

Two of his accomplices, including Santos' former campaign treasurer, have pleaded guilty in connection with his alleged fraud.
