Man arrested after attempting to bring gun into Volusia County Courthouse

A man was arrested while attempting to bring a gun through security at Volusia District Court on Friday, according to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. In a social media post, Chitwood said Robert Suggs arrived at Volusia District Court on Friday and said he wanted to see the public defender. Security officers discovered a handgun in Suggs' backpack and found there was one round in the chamber and seven rounds in the magazine. It also turned out the gun had been stolen, according to Chitwood, and Suggs did not have an appointment with the public defender. Suggs is a convicted felon and was out on bail on one count of animal cruelty. He faces new charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon in the state, aggravated theft of a firearm, concealed carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Chitwood, it also turned out that the gun had been stolen and Suggs had not had an appointment with the public defender.

Suggs is a convicted felon and was out on bail for an aggravated animal cruelty case. He faces new charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a domestic felon, aggravated theft of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon in a prohibited place and possession of drug paraphernalia.
