George Santos, accused of fraud, is expected to plead guilty on Monday

WASHINGTON – Controversial former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), accused of fraud and embezzlement of campaign funds, is expected to plead guilty Monday, according to multiple reports.

Santos was initially indicted in May last year on 13 counts, including alleged wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and lying to the House of Representatives. He was then charged with an additional 10 counts in October last year, accusing him of stealing the identities of campaign donors and using their credit cards.

The New York Times and ABC News reported that the confession would take place in federal court in New York, sparing Santos from a federal trial that is expected to begin in September. He had previously pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Santos was expelled from Congress last year after a scathing report by the House Ethics Committee accused him of “blatantly stealing money from his own campaign,” deceiving donors and tricking them into making payments for his own benefit, and violating federal criminal laws.

Although Santos rejected the report at the time, calling it an attempt to discredit him and force him out of office, the House of Representatives voted by a bipartisan majority of 311 to 114 to remove him from office.
