Mike Elko gives update on injury to key Texas A&M running back

After suffering a foot injury during a practice game last week, Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens will most likely miss the entire season, according to coach Mike Elko.

Elko announced the injury on Sunday night after Owens sustained the injury during practice the day before, but did not provide any information on how long Owens would be out.

ESPN first reported on Sunday that Owens would miss the entire season, and Elko essentially confirmed that during a press conference on Saturday.

The Aggies coach said it's possible Owens could return next season if the team's season is extended with postseason play.

The Aggies will now have to rely more heavily on returning running backs Amari Daniels and Le'Veon Moss, who would have been part of a rotating trio with Owens before his injury.

A&M is currently quite thin at the running back position, as Stanford transfer EJ Smith is the only other scholarship player on the roster.

Elko said the Aggies do not plan to convert players from other positions on the team to running backs, and that junior Anthony DiNota will be the fourth running back on the roster.

Owens is the only player with a major injury the Aggies have suffered in fall training camp so far, but given the lack of roster depth, he is certainly not a player they want to do without.
