Police say stalker just released from Bergen County Jail steals car from car dealership parking lot

Daniel MacTaggart, of Elmwood Park, was arrested Sunday, Aug. 11, on charges of repeated stalking, driving without a license/registration and failure to possess a driver's insurance card, court records show.

Hours after his release, MacTaggart entered the Park Avenue Acura rest stop on W. Passaic Street in Maywood around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, and told employees he was the owner of a car parked outside, Maywood Police Chief Terence Kenny said.

“He got the keys and drove away with the car while the service manager watched him get in, even though he knew he wasn't the owner,” Kenny said.

The vehicle traveled south of Maywood, where Hasbrouck Heights police arrested the vehicle. Wood-Ridge police arrested MacTaggart with assistance from Hasbrouck Heights and Moonachie police.

Kenny says that despite his new arrest, he would be released from Maywood Police Department custody due to bail reform.

“We contacted the court and were able to overturn that decision,” Kenny said, “and he was booked into the Bergen County Jail.”

At the time of going to press, it was not yet clear whether he was still in custody or not.

MacTaggart faces a number of charges dating back to 2005. In 2014, he was stopped for driving the wrong way and found with heroin in Garfield, reported Daily Voice.

While most of his offenses since then appear to be traffic-related, MacTaggar was charged with harassment in Little Ferry in 2021.

Records show that since his arrest on August 14, MacTaggar has been charged with theft by unauthorized receipt and resisting or eluding justice.
