Community concerned after murder suspect walks out of jail due to court system glitch – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE – A man is back in custody weeks after a fatal shooting at an uptown Charlotte nightclub.

Despite serious charges being brought against 31-year-old Laquan Hoe, he initially managed to post bail and leave prison.

Channel 9's Glenn Counts investigated how the suspect was able to escape so quickly.

On June 8, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a shooting at the A1 Lounge on North Tryon Street.

At the scene, police found four people with gunshot wounds. Each victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where one of them, Aundrey Brown Jr., died.

Police said Hoe was arrested in connection with the case shortly after the shooting, but because several people were in possession of the weapon used in the shooting, it took a while before he was charged with murder.

According to court officials, Hoe was originally held in jail without bail, but an error resulted in him being granted $10,000 bail. He paid that bail and was free for weeks before police could formally charge him with murder.

Marcus Philemon, founder of Courtwatch, told Channel 9 he understood the police's frustration.

“There should be more checks and balances when you consider the criminal history of the individual. I think there should have been more checks and balances. Someone should have said, 'Hey, these are pretty serious charges that require $10,000 bail and this individual can get $1,000 bail,'” Philemon explained.

According to police, Hoe was re-arrested and charged with murder. He is currently in jail without bail.
