Man sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatal shooting on New Year's Day 2023

Edwardsville, Illinois (First Alert 4) – A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the death of an 18-year-old in 2023.

Albert Campos, 20, of Collinsville, Illinois, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty Friday to first-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Miguel D. Villegas-DeSantiago.

According to police, Campos shot Villegas-DeSantiago on January 1, 2023, as he sat in a pickup truck outside a residence on Princeton Avenue in the State Park Place area near Collinsville.

Campos' co-defendant, Matias L. Herrera, 27, of Granite City, Illinois, was sentenced to 30 years in prison in January after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Herrera was the one who drove Campos to the scene where Villegas-DeSantiago was shot.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department, Greater St. Louis Major Case Squad, Collinsville Police Department and other agencies investigated this case.
