Calcutta rape and murder case: CBI investigators also confirmed his version with that of doctors, interns and nurses who were on duty at the hospital that night

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday subjected former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh to a marathon interrogation. It was the second consecutive day that the former principal was being questioned by the agency over the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor in the seminar hall of the government hospital in Kolkata.

The Calcutta High Court last week sharply criticized the West Bengal government, saying Sandip Ghosh should have been the first to be questioned in hospital about the murder.

  1. The CBI asked Sandip Ghosh where he was on the night of the trainee doctor's rape and murder. The agency also asked him who informed him about the incident and what was his immediate reaction, PTI reported.
  2. The CBI detectives also confirmed his version with that of doctors, interns and nurses who were on duty at the hospital that night.
  3. During the first round of questioning, the former headmaster was asked about his initial reaction to the news of the doctor's death, who he had instructed to inform the family and how and who contacted the police, the officials told the news agency. PTI quoted a CBI official as saying that some of his answers were confused.
  4. The official said the CBI asked Sandip Ghosh about the weekly duty roster of the pulmonary department where the victim worked and it was found that the victim's doctor had to work up to 48 hours at a stretch.
  5. The CBI has already questioned 20 people from a list of 40, including doctors and police officers.
  6. The CBI has invited two psychologists from New Delhi to participate in the interview.
  7. On Saturday, a CBI team reached Sambhunath Pandit Street in South Kolkata, where the main accused Sanjoy Roy lived in a rented house. The agency spoke to his mother about his last whereabouts. The agency is trying to create a map of the places the accused visited on the day of the rape and murder. They have also contacted his friends, doctors and police officials who knew the accused.

In the wake of ongoing protests against the rape and murder of the junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata Police has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC) for seven days. In an order issued by Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar Goyal on Saturday, it was stated that rallies, gatherings, processions, DharnasDemonstrations and unlawful assembly of five or more persons are prohibited in the specified area of ​​Kolkata.
  9. “…In exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (1) of section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, read with sub-section (3) of the said section, I, Vineet Kumar Goyal, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in my capacity as Magistrate for the Kolkata Metropolitan Region as well as the South 24 Parganas District (within the limits of the suburbs of Kolkata falling under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police), hereby prohibit for a period of seven (7) days from 18.08.2024 to 24.08.2024 or until further orders, any unlawful assembly of five (5) or more persons, carrying of lathis, deadly or other dangerous weapons or commission of any act likely to result in breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity within the specified area in the city of Kolkata,” the order said.
  10. The doctor-in-training was found dead in the hospital's seminar room earlier this month. Her autopsy report revealed that she had been tortured and then strangled. Her body bore numerous injuries and blood was oozing from her eyes, private parts and mouth.
