Five teens charged with hate crimes in Rehoboth Beach | Latest News

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE – Police have arrested and released five teenagers and one adult following an alleged hate crime.

According to Rehoboth Beach police, three women were attacked by a group of teenagers in the area of ​​Baltimore Avenue and Second Street around 2 a.m. on August 17. Police say five teenagers got out of a vehicle and approached the women, saying their public behavior was inappropriate. Police concluded that the teenagers attacked the victims solely because they perceived their sexual orientation.

During the argument, police say the teens fired an airsoft gun at the women before getting back into the vehicle and fleeing. The vehicle was reportedly stopped by Dewey Beach police along Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach. All five teens and one adult were arrested without incident.

All of the suspects were from Delaware; a 15-year-old from Rehoboth Beach, a 15-year-old from Blades, a 14-year-old from Rehoboth Beach, a 14-year-old from Lewes, a 15-year-old from Rehoboth Beach and 21-year-old Jerome Charleston from Bridgeville.

All five teens were charged with the following and released into the custody of a parent or guardian:

  • Serious Threat X3 Crime
  • Offensive touching X3 offense
  • Hate Crime X3 Offenses
  • Conspiracy in the third degree
  • Administrative offence

Charleston was charged with disorderly conduct and summoned to appear in court at a later date.
