Man released on bail for attempted murder, now in prison with three arrest warrants

August 16 – Federal and local police have arrested a man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder after he evaded trial on two other domestic violence cases two years ago.

Nathan Benninger was arrested in July 2022 on two counts of assault. He was released on bail but failed to attend his court date, so two warrants were issued, said Stevens County Sheriff's Deputy Greg Gowin.

On August 7, according to Gowin, he attempted to kill his current partner by shooting her with his gun. The two arrest warrants against him for domestic violence were issued the following day.

The Steven's County Sheriff's Office worked with the U.S. Marshals Service and the Spokane County Sheriff's SWAT team to find Benninger and arrest him, he said. They were able to locate him Thursday evening.

When the SWAT team arrived shortly after midnight on Friday, Benninger was armed and barricaded in a building.

Benninger was eventually arrested and is now in the Stevens County Jail. His first court date is early next week.
