(Bloomberg) — Dyson Ltd. will cut about 1,000 jobs in the U.K., nearly a third of its workforce there, as part of a broader restructuring at the home appliance maker.

Dyson informed employees on Tuesday and plans to keep its research and development center in the country, said a person familiar with the announcement who asked not to be identified because talks with employees are ongoing. The company employs 3,500 people in the U.K. and had 14,000 employees worldwide at the end of last year.

“We have grown rapidly and like all companies, we review our global structures from time to time to ensure we are ready for the future,” Chief Executive Officer Hanno Kirner, who took up his role earlier this year, said in a statement on Tuesday. “For this reason, we are proposing changes to our organization that may result in layoffs.”

The Financial Times was the first to report on the cuts.

Founded in 1991 in Malmesbury, England, by billionaire James Dyson, Dyson rose to fame with its bagless vacuum cleaners. Over the past two decades, the company has expanded its offerings to include other household items such as air purifiers and hand dryers.

More than half of the company's revenue now comes from the Asia-Pacific region and in recent years the company has expanded its manufacturing presence in countries such as Singapore and the Philippines. Founder Dyson announced plans to move the company's headquarters from the UK to Singapore in 2019.
