Sukhpal Singh Khaira, accused of the crime, comes from a family of peddlers

KAPURTHALA: Congress MLA from Bholath Sukhpal Singh Khaira has claimed that the accused caught for sacrilege in a Gurdwara in Bhagwanpur village of his constituency on Friday came from a family of drugs peddlerand his father and mother were used by the Punjab Police to implicate him in “false cases”.
He said that given the defendant's past, there was a strong probability that there was a deep-rooted conspiracy behind this outrage that needed to be uncovered.
“Accused Hardev Singh alias Debi's father Kashmir Singh of Dogranwal village has two dozen cases pending against him, most of them for drug trafficking. He has also been convicted and is facing trial in some cases. Punjab Police has recorded his statement and made him an authoriser of falsely incriminating me. A separate complaint has also been registered from his wife for allegedly threatening her to file another false complaint against me. Debi's brother is also a known drug peddler,” Khaira said while addressing a gathering at Bhagwanpur village Gurdwara.
He also posted his speech on Facebook. “Anyone who makes false statements on behalf of the police is working for them. There is a deep-rooted conspiracy behind this outrage. Now the police can say that the accused is mentally stable, but that would be an excuse,” he said, adding that the accused's background was of great importance in this case.
“I strongly suspect that there is an agency or organisation behind him that wants to create trouble in Punjab. A lot of things are happening in Punjab, manipulations are being done to spread narratives that defame the state and then create an atmosphere for excesses. A fair investigation should be done to unravel the entire conspiracy,” he argued.
Khaira also mentioned that justice was not done in the cases related to Bargari sacrilege and fresh incidents were occurring, “The Bhagwant Mann government has not given permission to prosecute Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in these cases and the trials in these cases have also been stayed. Some sacrilege cases have also been transferred out of Punjab and the Punjab government has not taken any action to bring them to the state,” Khaira added.
