Kolkata rape and murder case: TMC v TMC demands questioning of top cop | Latest news from India

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Sunday objected to his colleague Sukhendu Sekhar Ray's demand for questioning Calcutta Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The controversy started after Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a veteran TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP, raised questions about the Kolkata Police's investigation into the case. Follow LIVE updates here.

Ray said that questioning of the former vice-chancellor of the medical college and Goyal in custody was necessary to find out who had originally “populated the suicide theory” in the case.

He was referring to statements made by the victim's parents, who said they were initially told that their daughter had committed suicide. Goyal categorically denied these allegations.

“The CBI must act fairly. Interrogation of the former headmaster and police commissioner is a must to find out who circulated the suicide story and why,” he wrote on X.

“Why was the wall of the hall torn down, who made Roy so powerful, why was the sniffer dog deployed after three days? Hundreds of such questions. Make them speak.”

In response, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh defended the Calcutta police commissioner, saying he had tried his best to solve the case and described his party colleague's request as “regrettable”.

“I also demand justice in the RGKar case. But I strongly reject this demand regarding CP. After receiving the information, he tried his best. CP personally did his job and the investigation was positive. This kind of post is unfortunate, even from my superior.”

In a belatedly posted video message, Ghosh said Roy's demand was illogical and he should not have posted it.

“We are against this demand because within 12 hours CP Vineet Goyal did his best and the accused was arrested and further interrogation was going on. The CM had asked for another 3-4 days and there was a chance of a breakthrough. But now the case is with the CBI and the CM has no objection to it,” he said. “Sukhendu Sekhar Roy's emotions and protest are logical but such an illogical demand that he wants the arrest of the police commissioner, we condemn. He should not have tweeted this…”

Rape and murder of a doctor

The aspiring doctor was raped and murdered on August 9 in a seminar room at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta.

The crime occurred late at night in the seminar hall on the third floor of the pulmonary department. Police later said that numerous cuts and wounds were found on her body.

Although Sanjoy Roy, the main accused, has been arrested, the investigating authorities are yet to rule out the involvement of others in the crime. The crime has sparked widespread outrage and led to protests within and outside the medical community.
