CBI begins psychological test of accused in Kolkata rape and murder case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started conducting the psychological test of the accused in the Kolkata rape and murder case. A five-member team of experts from the CBI's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) will monitor the test.

On August 9, the main accused Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer of the Kolkata Police, was posted at the police outpost of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments.

A 31-year-old doctor with a doctorate fell asleep in a seminar room on Thursday night. Her partially clothed body with numerous injuries was found early Friday morning.

While the CBI does not require the court's permission for this test, after its completion, other tests such as brain mapping, lie detector tests and narco-analysis of the accused can be conducted with the court's permission.

The five-member CBI medical team, which arrived in Kolkata yesterday to conduct the test, will ask Sanjoy Roy questions from a prepared list.

In addition, a forensic team has been at RG Kar Hospital for three days to collect evidence from the seminar hall where the victim's body was found.

What is a psychological test?

Psychoanalysis is a psychological assessment conducted on subjects to understand their habits, routines and behavior.

This test allows investigators to subject Roy's voice to a multi-layered voice analysis, i.e. a lie detector test, to determine whether he is telling the truth.

The test is also called a “psychological autopsy.”
