Houston police said the incident began with a fight between a man and his wife or girlfriend at a nightclub.

HOUSTON – A man was arrested after police say he struck and killed an innocent bystander in Houston's Midtown early Sunday morning when he attempted to run over a woman believed to be his girlfriend or wife outside a nightclub.

This happened around 3 a.m. on San Jacinto Street near the Gulf Freeway.

Houston police said officers were patrolling the area when they heard what they thought were gunshots. When they arrived at the scene, they found a woman had been struck by a car. Witnesses told police the suspect drove away. He was later arrested several blocks away on Jefferson Street.

According to HPD, this incident began as some sort of domestic violence at a nightclub. When the man and his partner were kicked out of the club, he got in his car and drove off, crashing into several other vehicles before attempting to hit the woman he was with. She was able to swerve, but an innocent bystander was struck and killed.

According to police, the innocent passerby was the manager of a club who was preparing to go home.

The case is being investigated by HPD's Traffic Crimes and Homicide Divisions. HPD said murder charges are being considered.
