Why is everyone on the internet suddenly “reserved”? The latest viral trend is taking

The Cambridge Dictionary defines “demure” as an adjective meaning “quiet and well-mannered,” especially in reference to women. But in an age of girl bosses and fierce independence, why is a seemingly old-fashioned concept of modesty suddenly taking over the internet?

What is the conservative trend?

Check out some videos on the “low-key” trend below and maybe you’ll discover what all the fuss is really about:

How did the modesty trend come about?

TikTok user Jools Lebron is the mastermind behind the viral “humility” trend, which revolves around a few key phrases she uses in her videos – yes, you guessed it: “very demure, very mindful.”

In one clip, she humorously gives advice on “how to be very natural, approachable and reserved in the workplace.”

She says: “This is how I come to work. Very low key. I don't wear makeup. I don't come with eyeliner and mascara. I put a little hair oil in the wig, I tint it a little and put cream on it, I put a little eyebrow gel on – very considerate, very approachable, very low key. Let's be mindful at work, ladies. This is not a fashion show.”

LeBron’s videos always end with the reminder to “be careful and restrained, ladies,” and that’s how the trend started.

In conversation with The GuardianShe said she even offers tips on how to stay calm on family trips, advising to arrive “very early, very punctually, very considerately and very cautiously.”

LeBron uses the term almost satirically, making fun of the portrayal of femininity.

After her videos went viral, she shared on social media, “One day on my break I was playing cashier and making videos. Now I'm flying across the country hosting events and I'll be able to fund the rest of my gender transition.”
