2 drivers die in wrong-way driving accident on Loop 202 in Phoenix; impairment suspected

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two drivers were killed in a wrong-way driving accident on a highway in southern Phoenix early Sunday morning.

According to Department of Public Safety officials, a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near Baseline Road around 2 a.m.

Seconds later, the driver collided head-on with another vehicle near Elliot Road, troopers say. A third driver was also involved in the crash and came to a stop.

Both drivers involved in the accident were pronounced dead at the scene. The third driver was uninjured.

According to authorities, one of the drivers was not wearing a seatbelt, so impairment is suspected.

Loop 202 South Mountain northbound is closed at Elliot Road. There is no estimated time for the highway to reopen.

No names were given. The investigation is ongoing.
