Man arrested after shooting at firefighters, rescue workers and stealing fire engine

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – The Rowan County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man after he shot at fire and rescue personnel and then fled the scene in a fire engine.

According to officials, Rowan County Fire and Rescue Services rushed to Shinn Farm Road and Highway 152 around 11:45 a.m. where an unconscious man was sitting in a vehicle.

When they arrived on the scene, the man did not appear to require medical attention and may have been impaired. They contacted the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and while waiting for the Highway Patrol to arrive, the man pulled out a handgun and began shooting at fire and emergency personnel.

The sheriff's office said the man, identified as Miguel Angel Ramirez, got into a fire truck and left the scene of the accident and that the vehicle later came to rest at the corner of Unity Church Road and Highway 152.

According to officials, no one was injured and the firearm was confiscated.

Ramirez is currently in custody.
