Former Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp takes on a new job and returns to the coaching bench

Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, is set to make an early return to football management, taking on a one-off role at his old club Borussia Dortmund. Klopp left Liverpool at the end of last season, saying he was “running out of energy” and needed a break after seven-and-a-half years at the helm.

Despite being linked with various roles over the summer, Klopp enjoyed his time off in Mallorca, but has now agreed to referee a farewell match for Borussia Dortmund duo Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski in September.

The 57-year-old coached both players during his tenure at Dortmund from 2008 to 2015. In a video shared by Dortmund on Instagram, Piszczek and Blaszczykowski discuss their plans for the game.

Klopp, wearing black sunglasses and a white T-shirt, joins the video call and expresses surprise at their desire to train before the game.

The pair shared a hearty laugh before asking which team he would take the helm of. “I couldn't care less. I do it like I used to, I start thinking about it five minutes beforehand,” he joked, reports the Mirror.

“Is the game sold out? I would buy a ticket anyway if I wasn’t going!”

A friendly match offers Klopp the opportunity for a nostalgic visit to his old stomping ground, where he can reconnect with his former charges without the usual pressure. “It's a case of, how can I put it, running out of energy,” Klopp admitted in January when discussing his possible departure from the Liverpool coaching post.

“I don't have a problem now, of course I knew for a while that I would have to announce it at some point, but now I'm absolutely fine. I know that I can't do the job over and over and over and over again.”

Amid summer rumours pointing to a possible role as England manager, Klopp clarified at the end of July: “At the moment there is nothing at all in terms of jobs. No club, no country. Some people probably haven't heard that. And it would be the biggest loss of face in the history of football if someone said: 'I'm making an exception for you now.'”

“I'm going to do some work. I'm too young to just concentrate on padel tennis and grandchildren. Will I be a coach again? I would actually rule that out at the moment. Let's see how it looks in a few months. Nothing is happening at the moment.”
