Maddux Madsen beats former five-star recruit Malachi Nelson to become starting quarterback at Boise State

A return Boise State The quarterback prevailed over the Broncos' top-class QB transfer and applied for the job as the team's starting quarterback.

Boise should be named Maddux Madsen as starting quarterback, a source told 247Sports and CBS Sports.

Madsen was in a competition with USC Transfer and five-star recruit of the class of 2023 Malachi Nelson.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Madsen played in nine games for the Broncos last season, throwing for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions. He also ran for 120 yards and scored two touchdowns. In his only start, Madsen completed 6 of 11 passes for 202 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions in a 42-14 win over New Mexico.

Nelson, meanwhile, transferred to Boise earlier this year after redshirting during his only season at USC. As a recruit, the California native was ranked as the fifth-best quarterback and 13th-best overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class.

The Broncos open the season on August 31 against Georgia Southern.
