Father of murdered doctor tells NDTV

New Delhi:

The parents of the young doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College told NDTV that they had lost faith in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after seeing how the police handled the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation is at least making efforts, her father told NDTV in an exclusive interview. He also said he had given a page from his daughter's diary to the CBI, but refused to discuss its contents.

“Initially, I had full faith in her (Mamata Banerjee), but now I don't. She is demanding justice, but why is she saying this? She can take care of it, she is not doing anything,” he said when asked about the investigation being conducted by the state.

“They say, 'We want justice'. But those in the public who say the same thing, they try to lock up,” he said, without mentioning the baton attack on fans at a soccer match who chanted “We want justice” slogans.

The woman's mother had some advice for the rest of the state's residents: “All Mamata Banerjee's schemes – the Kanyashree scheme, the Lakshmi scheme – are all pseudo-schemes. Anyone who wants to avail these schemes should please make sure that their Lakshmi is safe at home before using them.”

After a 36-hour shift, the second-year doctoral student went alone to an empty seminar room in the evening to rest. The hospital has no emergency room. She had apparently fallen asleep there.

Her partially clothed body with numerous injuries was found there the next morning.

The prime suspect is Sanjoy Roy, a Kolkata Police volunteer posted at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital police outpost and having access to all departments. He was arrested based on CCTV footage showing him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered. The CCTV footage shows a Bluetooth headset found near the victim's body, which was attached to his neck. It was also found to be paired with his phone.

Local media reported that Roy admitted to the crime shortly after police began questioning him. “Hang me if you want,” he casually told police, the reports said.

When asked if it was possible that more than one person had attacked the daughter, her father said, “We have said that from the beginning. Everyone we spoke to, even the MBBS doctors, agreed that it is not possible that a single person could have caused so much damage.”

The saddest thing about the whole affair is that the people responsible for his daughter's safety failed in their duty, he said.

“As parents, we worry when our child is on the move, but not so much when she reaches her workplace. Earlier, we used to take her to school. Once she is through the gate, we feel relieved,” he told NDTV. “Now she is grown up. The roads were a problem, so we got her a car too,” he added.
