Doctor murdered and raped in Kolkata | Lawyer attacks Mamata Banerjee, says parents refused money because… | Latest news from India

Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the lawyer of the parent of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder victim, on Monday accused the West Bengal government of trying to influence witnesses. He also attacked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she is trying to downplay crimes against women by paying compensation to the victims.

“The role of the Chief Minister in the state of West Bengal is very reprehensible. Wherever a rape occurs, she immediately wants to contact the victim's family, pay them money and tell them that it is all over. Unfortunately, she has fixed a tariff list for rape victims,” he said, according to ANI.

The lawyer said Mamata Banerjee often tries to buy witnesses and such attempts were made in this case too.

“She is trying to buy the witnesses. This attempt was made in this case too. The victim's parents strongly opposed this because they did not want to be part of the CM's game,” he added.

The victim's father recently stated that he refused to accept compensation because his daughter would not approve of it and would be hurt.

“On the contrary, they gave us the authority to go to court and we did so. The investigation has been handed over to the CBI. The CBI has to submit the reports to the court,” the lawyer said.

He also vehemently attacked the Calcutta police.

“The police chief should not have held the press conferences. We saw that he completely failed to control the situation. In my opinion, the police's actions following the report are unsatisfactory,” the lawyer said.

The doctor-in-training was raped and murdered in the seminar room of the government-run RG Kar Hospital. She had gone into the room to rest after a grueling 36-hour shift.

She was suffocated after brutal torture.

The CBI is investigating the case. The police have arrested a volunteer named Sanjoy Roy for the crime.

However, the agency is questioning the former principal of the medical college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. They have asked the doctor why he made her parents wait for three hours before allowing them to see her body.
